Fingers pointed at foreign-owned farms for depleted water supplies in drought-stricken Arizona county

Aquifers now drying up, too

Arizona – The state’s water supply is drying up, and foreign-owned agricultural interests are being blamed to a large degree. The communities of Salome and Wenden in La Paz County are particularly in dire straits as the region continues to experience its worst drought in 1,200 years. With the Colorado River drying up, county residents are relying on state aquifers for their drinking water but they, too, are drying up. The head of the Wenden Water Improvement District says a United Arab Emirates-based company’s well is rapidly pumping water from the ground while the utility’s own wells are nearing the end of their useful life.
